Any minute now, however, the dreams of a comeback could come crashing down, if an appeals court decides that the former president stole more than that, and upholds the leftist leader\u2019s conviction on graft charges.<\/h6>\n<h6 class=\"regwall\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 18px; line-height: inherit; font-family: TiemposTextWeb-Regular, Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; vertical-align: baseline; color: #3c3c3c; font-style: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-position=\"1\">Perhaps the biggest question hanging over the 2018 elections is whether Lula, who currently holds a\u00a0<a class=\"terminal-news-story\" title=\"Brazil\u2019s 2018 Election Poll Shows Lula, Bolsonaro Ahead: O Globo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/terminal\/OYL7W26JIJUO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">twenty point opinion poll lead<\/a>\u00a0over his nearest rival, will be able to take part. One imminent threat to both his liberty and political career lies in a three-judge appeals court currently mulling his nine and a half year sentence.<\/h6>\n<h6 class=\"regwall\" style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 18px; line-height: inherit; font-family: TiemposTextWeb-Regular, Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; vertical-align: baseline; color: #3c3c3c; font-style: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\" data-position=\"1\">There\u2019s no deadline for its decision. Even if the court quashes that guilty verdict, Lula faces five other pending prosecutions and three police investigations. According to Lula and other party leaders the cases against him amount to &#8220;political persecution&#8221;. Some members have even said that the party would consider boycotting the elections if Lula is barred from running.<\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"margin: 30px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 18px; line-height: inherit; font-family: TiemposTextWeb-Regular, Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; vertical-align: baseline; color: #3c3c3c; font-style: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\"><strong>&#8220;The Workers Party doesn\u2019t have another candidate,&#8221; said Juliano Griebeler, a political analyst at the consultancy Barral M Jorge, who added that keeping Lula in the frame helps to keep the party united. &#8220;After the impeachment there was practically a stampede,&#8221; he said, referring to the removal of Lula\u2019s hand-picked successor, Dilma Rousseff. &#8220;All over the place people left the PT,&#8221; he added.<\/strong><\/h6>\n<h6 style=\"margin: 30px 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-numeric: inherit; font-weight: normal; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 18px; line-height: inherit; font-family: TiemposTextWeb-Regular, Georgia, Cambria, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; vertical-align: baseline; color: #3c3c3c; font-style: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-color: initial;\">The party is deeply concerned about what to do in the event Lula cannot run.
